PictoXacobeo is an Android communication companion for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago that helps people with speech, reading or language difficulties express basic needs using pictograms. The app lets users combine visual symbols into simple messages for asking directions, requesting services at hostels, ordering food or interacting with local churches and shops, and it supports Spanish, English, French, German, Italian and Portuguese to ease communication along the route. Pilgrims choose PictoXacobeo to stay independent and confident on the trail through an accessible, task‑focused interface.

Development Team

The PictoXacobeo project received support from the Tourism Agency of the Xunta de Galicia as part of the Xacobeo 2021 revitalization initiative within the O Teu Xacobeo program. The app uses pictograms produced for an open pictogram project by designer Sergio Palao and distributed by the Government of Aragon under a Creative Commons BY‑NC‑SA license, reflecting a collaborative approach to accessibility and cultural tourism.
